As I sat through my Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class, one of the first things we were told was "The military appreciates your service.. But once you cross that line into civilian life, they're done with you".

Who does take care of our nations veterans as they make that transition to civilian life? Yes, there are VSO's and several programs out there that do provide valuable resources.

These are also the same exact people who are giving you a week long brief of every single benefit out there possible and it is concluded by- "Okay great, so if you have any questions, here is my information".

My takeaway from it all: This has been a ton of "good to know" information but not necessarily "need to know" information..

There is one thing you need to know when leaving the military. "How do I get access to all these benefits they are talking about?" Yes, we know that the benefits you are entitled to are based off your disability rating.. But how do you get an accurate rating?


This is what they do not discuss. Instead you get information overload with a simple "when you're ready to file, come to my office."
